Surveys conducted by the Agency for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services shows that women are more likely to experience mental illness than men (23 percent vs. 16 percent), while the rate of mental disorders among people aged 18 to 25 years is twice that of those aged 50 years and over.
The agency defines mental disorders among adults as getting a diagnosis of mental disorders, behavioral or emotional, are not included due to developmental disorders and drug use.
The survey also found that five percent of U.S. adults, or 11.4 million people, has suffered from a serious mental disorder in the last year that substantially interfere with their lives.
The report found that about 8.7 million U.S. adults have a serious minded to commit suicide in the past year, with 2.5 million of them made a suicide plan and 1.1 million trying to commit suicide.
Citizens of the United States who suffer from mental disorders are three times greater chance of having a substance dependence or substance abuse than adults who are not mentally deranged.
Among the younger age groups, 12 to 17, about 8 percent - or 1.9 million teens - experience serious depressive episode last year, which is defined as a period for at least two weeks when a person decrease in mood or loss of interest.
The teens who experience episodes of serious depression that also have the opportunity two times more likely to use illicit drugs than those without depression.
The agency surveyed about 67,500 people aged 12 years and older throughout the United States.
